Ohio Division of Wildlife's "How to Construct a Bird House:
Dimension and Placement Table"

When building bird houses, place them as near natural nesting conditions as possible. Those for woods-nesting birds should be placed in trees rather than in the open. However, some experts recommend that all types of bird houses be placed on metal posts rather than in trees. This practice discourages raccoons and cat from disturbing the birds.

Most birds that nest in houses will occupy them anywhere in a yard or garden. But the houses should be away from areas of excessive disturbance. People prefer brightly-painted bird houses but birds like unpainted ones. Purple martin houses are an exception to this rule of plainness; they should be painted white to reflect heat and keep the houses cooler in bright, hot weather.
