This checklist is the ongoing result of several dedicated naturalists, biologists and birders in the Hocking Valley region.  Many of the species listed are found nesting only in this region of Ohio (marked with an *).  Good luck and have a great time searching out the many spectacular species of birds in the area.

 

 

This checklist is designed to work alone or in conjunction with the Hocking Valley Bird Trail map.  Many of the symbols overlap and are utilized in both reference items.

 

               Aquatic habitats including lakes, ponds, rivers, borrow pits and wetlands.

 

                  Heavily forested habitat.

 

                  Open grasslands or meadows.  Including reclaimed strip-mine areas.

 

                  Succession forest/field or primarily mixed habitat.

 

C = Common species                                          N = Nesting Species (Species marked with an * nest

                                                                            M = Seen most commonly in either Spring or Fall

R = Rare or uncommon species                                  migration.
